Curriculum MD/ BS Health Sciences programs

I. BASIC SCIENCE COMPONENTS

The Basic Science Component provides students with the base knowledge required to function competently in clinical medicine. The component of the program is five semesters (20 months) in length. Each semester is 16 weeks long with short breaks in-between them.

The Basic Science Campus is in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The Basic Science program is taught by highly skilled and dedicated professionals who possess either an M.D., Ph.D. or both degrees. The Clinical training or Clinical Sciences are taught in various teaching hospitals throughout the United States, Canada, SVG, etc, allowing for a truly international experience.

The curriculum covers subjects such as Gross Anatomy, Embryology, Histology, Physiology, Psychology, Pharmacology, Pathology, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Ethics and Research Methods. An excellent student-professor ratio provides ample opportunity for students to interact with their professors on a personal level in addition to the classroom setting. 17

Basic Science is followed by five semesters of clinical clerkship / rotations at affiliated hospitals in the United States and abroad. The approximate length of the entire MD program amounts to a total of 40-48 months, depending on the time that a student may elect to take in preparation for the NBME comprehensive, USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 examinations. Clinical integration of the course material begins in the first semester of the Basic Sciences. In addition to didactic lectures, relevant clinical cases are presented and discussed in-depth in each course.

CLINICAL SCIENCES COMPONENTS- total of 20+ months

Students must pass NBME Comprehensive and / or USMLE Step 1 Exams before beginning the 80 weeks of core and elective clinical rotations. Students who are not from United States or Canada, and who do not plan on attempting to obtain license in the United States/Canada will be required to pass the NBME Examinations with a score set by the school.

Also, students must satisfied a number of hospital requirement before entering clinical sciences such as:

  1. Students are required to demonstrate a passing score in an NBME Comprehensive Basic Science Self-Assessment (CBSSA) before taking the CBSE.
  2.  A passing score at CBSE is only valid for 12 weeks. Students wishing to take Step 1 after 12 weeks of passing CBSE, will be required to re-take the CBSE for a new passing grade.
  3. Students who fail CBSE must retake their next attempt within 12 weeks of their previous attempt. Students who delay taking the CBSE until after this time will be referred to the Exam & Promotions Committee. Students have four attempts to pass CBSE exam
  4. Students who fail their third  CBSE attempt may be subject to being placed on a leave of absence / probation.
  5. Students who fail CBSE on their last attempt will be subject to dismissal from the  MD degree program.
  6. Students who are required to take the USMLE Step 1 examination have to pass NBME CBSE exam first and sit for USMLE Step 1 no later than 12 weeks after passing NBME CBSE exam. Students who delay taking USMLE Step 1 until after this time, will be referred to the Promotions Committee.
  7. Successful completion of the Clinical Clerkship Program (≥ 80 weeks) in Semesters 6-11, is a requirement for graduation from the medical school. The Program is divided into Required Core Clerkship (48 weeks over Semesters 6-9), and Elective Clerkship (≥32 weeks over Semesters 10-11).

The Clinical Clerkship Component takes place in affiliated hospitals throughout the United States, Canada, SVG,  and other international hospital partners.

The 48 weeks of “core” (required) clerkship’s are as follows:

                                                          CORE CLERKSHIP

TOTAL CORE ROTATIONS48 WEEKS

The remainder of the clinical experiences consist of elective rotations in the various specialties and sub-specialties of medicine. A partial list of possible elective rotations is provided below.

                                                  ELECTIVE ROTATIONS  32 WEEKS TOTAL

There are also, two selective rotation e.g. one of these rotation is mandatory:

      SELECTIVE ROTATION

EMERGENCY MEDICINE  4
NEUROLOGY   4

Students are advised to select a plan of 7 elective  and 1 (one) selective rotations specifically designed to provide additional clinical exposure in areas of career interest for the student. These elective/selective experiences improve your chances for successfully matching into a Residency program in your specialty of choice.

BACHELOR OF HEALTH SCIENCES

When a student matriculates into the Pre-Medical Program and completes the four semesters, they continue onto the MD program. Upon completion of the first four semesters of the Basic Science component of the MD program, the student will be awarded a Bachelor of Health Sciences (see table below of courses). At this point, if the student qualifies, and so chooses, they may continue onto the fifth semester of the Basic science course and continue to Clinical Sciences to eventually earn their MD.
